Much like clothing trends, kitchen design trends repeat every decade. In the 60’s we saw a lot of warm tones throughout the entire house. They considered wallpaper a lux design trend combined with natural wood cabinets, burnt orange accents, and shag rugs. Laminate countertops and avocado appliances dominated the 70’s. Moving into the 80’s we saw black appliances, tile countertops, and neutral tones. The ’90s brought us oak cabinets, lighter tones throughout the kitchen with white appliances, vinyl flooring, and a country vibe. The turn of the century introduced us to stainless steel appliances, granite countertops, and dark cherry oak cabinets. And finally, we sum it all up in the last decade with subway tile, farmhouse sinks, open spaces, and never enough white.

So what’s in store for 2020 design trends? As we mentioned, design trends make a comeback. We’ve got the top 8 trends you will see over the next few years.

Grainy Woods

  • Natural grains bring warmth to any kitchen. The organic look of flat-front cabinets allows you to pull in bright and vibrant colors while the focal point remains on the natural grains of oak or walnut textures.

Colorful Appliances

  • While white and stainless steel gives off a clean and crisp vibe, we’re ready for some pops of color. European design trends are coming to the U.S. bringing us colorful ranges in red, yellow, and orange.

Beautiful Blues

  • The Pantone color of the year is a classic blue 19-4052. We’ll see splashes of blue in wallpaper, tiles, cabinets, appliances, and islands. Cool blue tones with gold and brass hardware make for a beautifully warm, and well-rounded look.

Natural Wood

  • Reclaimed wood has been a popular trend over the years but companies are moving toward more natural, eco-friendly materials for kitchen cabinets.

Statements Stones

  • Natural stones don’t go out of style but what you’ll see this year are some statement stones like strong-veined marble that looks very busy but makes quite the statement.

Dark and Dramatic

  • From accent walls to cabinets, the all-white look is on its way out. You’ll start seeing bold dramatic colors throughout the kitchen. Bright orange islands and painted ceilings help liven up the kitchen.

Gold and Brass accents

  • Mixing your metals is a great way to add texture and shine to your kitchen. Gold and brass accents look beautiful against darker woods while your sink and faucet can have a different look.

Larder Cabinets

  • An organizer’s dream and a trend you’ll see for years to come. Larder is a perfect way to overcome storage capacity issues and provide you with more shelves than you can count. Larder just makes sense!

Before you jump on the white kitchen cabinet bandwagon, you must read this! Paint can undoubtedly transform an area of your home, but you must ensure that you match the kitchen cabinets with the rest of your home. The cabinet color should also be a color you love. The kitchen cabinets are the focal point of a significant space.

A lot to consider when choosing the color of your cabinets. Do you have a traditional kitchen with classic wall colors, or is your kitchen more modern looking with brighter tones? How much natural light does your kitchen have, or is your kitchen lit from recessed lighting? Also, consider the number of cabinets you have. Some kitchens are more open with cabinet space below the counter. Other kitchens utilize all of the wall space and pack as many cabinets as they can.

Longevity

Colors and stains go out of style. It’s best to choose something you like but also a bit on the safe side. Are you thinking of selling soon? If so, go with something more neutral, so it appeals to more people. Ensure you choose quality wood cabinetry that will last a long time.

Contrast and Multi-Color Options

Try mixing it up a bit! When white cabinets are paired with a darker color, it can give the entire space a unique look. Make sure you consider the countertop shades when deciding on cabinet colors. Be sure to visit our kitchen gallery for a wide variety of ideas.
